Subaru Moncton Duathlon - 01 June 2008

After a long cold winter the Moncton Duathlon signifies the start of the N.B. Duathlon/Triathlon season. A dull overcast day greeted the 84 competitors for a 9.00am start from Centennial Park in Moncton, but by the time the race started it turned humid and thankfully dry.  This race really kickstarts the season well with a great race, dozens of marshalls, lots of door prizes and a great atmosphere. It's also an opportunity to see the early season form and Troy Allaby made a statement with this early season victory continuing the fine form he showed in 2007. First lady home was Gina Spear-Burrows in a quick 1hr 11min 47sec, good enough for 12th overall. Its wonderful to see bikes of every shape and size in transition and if this race sets the standard then we can look forward to a great multi-sport season in New Brunswick.

Critical Mass Bike RIde - Friday 30 May

At 5.30pm 12 riders left King Square for a ride around the busy commuter routes of Saint John as part of a Critical Mass awareness campaign to draw attantion to cycling in the city. In larger Canadian cities these events attract upwards of 1000 riders, so our effort in Saint John was a modest affair. Rides are planned for the final Friday each month and the numbers are expected to increase each month. Check out these pages in the coming weeks for details of the next ride.

1) Bicycling Magazine - Jan/Feb 08

The January/February issue of Bicycling Magazine provides a important major feature on America's Traffic Laws and what we as cyclists can do to ensure that there is a fair legal process for us in the event of an accident. It give the examples of serveral cyclists who have been involved in accidents with vehicles and how this has affected their lives as well as those of friends and family. The article deals with death, paralysis, taking action and tells you how to "ride smart". The article illustrates that cyclists are not just cyclists but your next door neighbour, your doctor, the paper boy, its just that they enjoy riding a bike and thats what makes us different, but not the enemy.

This is a thought provoking feature that does not glamourise cycling or driving but tells us all how we should share the road. It should be compulsory reading for anyone riding a bike for first time and for anyone driving a car. Go out, buy your copy today, grab a large coffee and read. After that - get involved.
